The steps of The Cathedral Church of St. Paul, off Boston Common, at 138 Tremont represent a real intersection between the Episcopal Church and the communities on the Boston Common. In the recent past, the Church has been witness to the distress and danger of severe poverty on the very threshold where faith communities enter their places of sacred worship.

Ministry of the Steps

Beginning in the summer of 2018 the Cathedral offered The Ministry of the Steps to these communities in an effort to calm the anxiety in our neighborhood and minister to those gathered on our threshold. This ministry will continue during the summer of 2019 with the primary goal of transforming the atmosphere in front of our building and, if even briefly, the lives of those who engage with it.

The Ministry of the Steps reflects and embodies the three directives of the Mission Strategy of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts: to ‘re-imagine our congregations,’ to ‘build our relationships,’ and to ‘engage our world.’ We organize, coordinate and curate programming on the front steps of St. Paul’s in the forms of :

· Public art – visual, dance, and musical performance;

· Community engagement -- such as chess tables where cross-boundary encounters can occur, a lending library, and public movie showings; and

· Public voice -- community organization platforms for social justice advocacy, seeking  to provide a platform in particular for young people and for groups in the wider Episcopal community who are working towards social justice.

The Ministry of the Steps, as imagined above and in the various conversations beginning among stakeholders, offers a vibrant urban experiment in re-imagining public space and in the radical engagement of communities in and around the Cathedral Church of St Paul and the Boston Common.
